The 14th Asian Biohydrogen, Biorefinery and Bioprocess Symposium (ABBS 2019) whose theme is “Innovation and Technology Towards ad Sustainable Bioeconomy” was held from 13th to 15th of November 2019 at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Hanoi, Viet Nam. Total of 178 participants attended the conference, they are from 9 APEC member economies (Viet Nam, Chinese Taipei, Korea, Thailand, China, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, The Philippines) and 2 Non-APEC member economies (Austria and France). This conference was organized by the Asia Bio-HyLinks, APEC ACABT, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) and APEC ACABT Viet Nam Hanoi Branch Center as one of the co-organizer. At the opening ceremony, the vice president of HUST, Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Phong and CEO of APEC ACABT, Prof. Dr. Shu-Yii WU has been invited to delivered opening and welcoming messages to warmly welcome all the participants to attend the symposium and wished that the symposium would be a great success.

The conference invited the speakers from several economies, one of the keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Shu-Yii WU on “Green Synergy Solutions for Future”. The Green Synergy Solutions as one of the alternative solutions to promote sustainable growth by integrating heat and hydrogen storage from renewable energies, utilizing biomass resources from agricultural waste. Meanwhile, Executive Secretary of APEC ACABT, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chen-Yeon CHU presented a case study conducted in Manado City, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, as a model for providing sustainable energy source for rural areas in the ASEAN regions and reduce environmental pollution by agricultural waste, and fulfill the concept of “self-sustained community”. The plenary session was followed by four scientific sessions such as Biomass Resources, Biohydrogen, Biogas and Biofuel; Fermentation and Bioprocess; Biomass Process and Refinery for Energy and Bioproducts; Bioenergy Sustainability and Bioeconomy). Total 52 oral presentations were delivered and 34 posters were exhibited during the symposium. The selected papers will be invited to be published in International Journal of Hydrogen Energy or International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation.
